Redesigning social protection in South Africa during COVID-19 | ESRC Celebrating Impact Prize 2023

ESRC-funded research prompted a radical new form of welfare for people living in poverty in South Africa during the COVID-19 pandemic. The innovative approach enabled the government to provide rapid assistance through cash grants rather than food parcels. This research, led by Dr Kate Orkin (University of Oxford), was the winner of the Outstanding Public Policy Impact award at the ESRC Celebrating Impact Prize 2023. The prize, now in its 11th year, is an annual opportunity to recognise the success of ESRC-funded researchers in achieving and enabling outstanding economic or societal impact from their research.
