In this video, I will be doing a driving and walking tour of Auburn. *Auburn is a Western Sydney suburb in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Auburn is located 16 kilometres (9.9 mi) west of the Sydney central business district. The Auburn area was once used by Aboriginal people as a market place for the exchange of goods, a site for ritual battles and a 'Law Place' for ceremonies. The area was located on the border between the Darug inland group and the Eora/Dharawal coastal group. In February 1793, Auburn area was established as the first free-agricultural settlement. In the late 1870s a "township" was surveyed "in the centre of the Liberty Plains… 11 miles from Sydney, on the Suburban Railway line" and divided into "fine township allotments all fronting grand wide streets". The subdivision was named 'Auburn', being a reference to Goldsmith's poem 'The Deserted Village'. The poem begins: "Sweet Auburn! Loveliest village of the plain". **According to the 2021 census of population, 34.6% of people were born in Australia. The most common other countries of birth were China 12.9%, Nepal 5.8%, Korea 5.8%, India 3.4%. and Lebanon 3.2%. Also featured in the video: *Auburn train station opened in 1877. The station was rebuilt in 1913 and again in 1954 when the line was quadrupled. *The Auburn Gallipoli Mosque is an Ottoman-style mosque. According to mosque officials, the name is meant to signify "the shared legacy of the Australian society and the main community behind the construction of the mosque, the Australian Turkish Muslim Community." *Auburn Hospital was first opened as the "Granville Electorate Cottage Hospital" in November 1907. Auburn Hospital is a 155-bed community hospital providing basic 24 hour facilities. *The Auburn Botanic Gardens are a botanical garden located in Auburn (a suburb of Sydney), New South Wales, Australia. It was established in 1977 and covers an area of 9.7 hectares (24 acres). There are two lakes, a waterfall and bridges. Duck River winds through the garden. The garden is maintained by Cumberland Council. It is open daily, and there is a small entry fee on weekends. The Japanese gardens, which have hosted couples from overseas, are one of the main attractions.
