Coming up next… an interview with Tommy James, a legend who technically recorded his first hit at just 15 years of age. He snuck into a club and heard today’s song Hanky Panky being played and noticed that the audience LOVED it. So he decided to cut the record himself. But he forgot the lyrics and made up some of his own. The recording wasn’t very good and he didn’t think it would go anywhere. The song was released and got some airplay. But it was forgotten until a few years later when it re-emerged after getting played at dance parties and then it was bootlegged and almost 100K copies of it were sold. 6 major labels picked up on this and a bidding war to sign the artist was brewing until a small label owned by a mobster threatened everyone and swooped in to sign this young artist. A short time later Hanky Panky hit #1 across America and to this day many people think the song was recorded by this now older artist. But come to find out it was the old crappy demo that many point to as the first punk rock song. The crazy story is next. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Executive Producer Brandon Fugal Honorary Producers SRoth, Eric Casella, Sherill Thatcher, Christina Root, K&K Bosemer ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check out my Hand Picked Selection Below Professor's Store Van Halen OU812 Vinyl Album https://amzn.to/3tLsII2 The 80s Collection https://amzn.to/3mAekOq 100 Best Selling Albums https://amzn.to/3h3qZX9 Ultimate History of 80s Teen Movie https://amzn.to/3ifjdKQ 80s to 90s VHS Video Cover Art https://amzn.to/2QXzmIX Totally Awesome 80s A Lexicon https://amzn.to/3h4ilrk Best In Ear Headphones (I Use These Every Day) https://amzn.to/2ZcTlIl ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check Out The Professor of Rock Merch Store -http://bit.ly/ProfessorMerch ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check Out Patron Benefits http://bit.ly/ProfessorofRockVIPFan Help out the Channel by purchasing your albums through our links! I’m excited to bring you another landmark episode from our series Revelations- where featured artists reveal rare stories about their biggest songs, along with fascinating insight about their careers. On this installment of Revelations, we have a legendary guest who quietly sold over 100 million records, and yet he made almost nothing from it because a mobster owned his label. but today we focus on his first ever Hit. A song that he recorded when he was only 15 years old. It’s Tommy James and the Shondells and the classic #1 hit Hanky Panky. Written by Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich who wrote many standards of the day including Be My Baby. The songwriting couple recorded it themselves in their group the Raindrops and released it as a B side They both thought the song was really terrible. It just said the same thing over and over and Ellie even said they wrote it at a lookout called Lovers Lane. While everyone else was sucking face these two were writing a song. When a 15-year-old kid named Tommy Jackson snuck into a club in Indiana and heard a local band play the song. He saw that the crowd loved it so he recorded it at a radio station with this group the Shondells. The song was put out on the Snap Label It sold pretty well in the midwest but then it was mostly forgotten. About 18 months later Tommy broke up with his group the Shondells he was only 18 when all of a sudden a DJ from Pittsburgh played his old version of Hanky Panky at some dances and it caused an earthquake of popularity. It was so popular that bootleggers made replicas and sold nearly 100k illegal copies of the song. When Tommy found out about the popularity of Hanky Pank he was floored. He was getting offers to play gigs but Tommy didn’t have a band anymore. He was a solo act TOMMY JACKSON so he decided to ask a local band he came into contact with named the Raconteurs to become the new shondells and he changed his name to Tommy James. By then record labels lined up to sign Tommy and the Shondells and there were some big ones. Columbia, Epic Atlantica, and many more.
