www.szaluckapiano.com Chopin’s Ballade op. 52 in F minor is the fourth and last one written by this great composer. It was written in years 1842-43 in Paris and Nohant, six years before its author’s death. This piece is considered to be one of the most beautiful of all Chopin’s compositions as well as one of the most challenging for a pianist (both musically and technically). This genius piece of music is believed to be inspired by poems of Adam Mickiewicz – one of the greatest Polish poets of the XIXth century. Although this connection is not confirmed we can definitely determine the presence of the dramatic narrative, the sense of storytelling, in the composition. The musical structure of this Ballade is very complicated with multiple layers overlapping themselves. Chopin’s achieved this effect by combining polyphony and variation techniques. It’s very interesting to notice composer’s approach to the first seven bars of the piece. Although the Ballade is written in a dramatic F minor key, the beginning opens with a heavenly C major, a key of the dominant. The ecstatic coda at the end finishes the piece with no hope for further reconciliation.
