ALEX HALEY, Roots, & Passing the Torch: Mischief Maker Show #32, with Bill Haley, Jr. and host Joel Freeman. Join 22,465 live viewers from around the world. Maya Angelou, the renowned poet and actress who portrayed Kunta Kinteh’s grandmother Yaisa in the 1977 miniseries Roots, once said, “You can’t really know where you are going until you know where you have been.” This sentiment captures the spirit that Bill Haley, Jr.— grandson of Alex Haley — has dedicated himself to upholding, applying the powerful lessons of family, culture, and heritage from Roots to the 21st century. As a young boy, Bill Haley, Jr. was among the 100 million viewers captivated by Roots’ sobering depiction of slavery and the perseverance of his ninth generation ancestor, Kunta Kinteh, who fought to ensure the oral history and legacy of his life would be passed down to future generations. Witnessing his family’s oral history come to life on television over eight consecutive nights was an unforgettable experience, filled with both pride and apprehension. Born in New York City during Black History Month (February 3rd), Bill Jr., then a shy twelve-year-old and grandson of the “world famous” author of Roots, was initially overwhelmed by the sudden attention, excitement, and curiosity about Roots, his grandfather, and his African ancestors: Kunta Kinteh, Kizzy, and Chicken George. Over time, he adapted to this new reality and embraced the responsibility that came with being associated with Alex Haley. Alex Haley was known for his remarkable storytelling abilities. Bill Jr. would eagerly listen to his grandfather recount the thrilling twelve-year search to uncover the family’s African heritage. It was during one of these moments that Bill first met Ebou Manga — a Gambian, son of Malick Manga, and Alex’s lifelong friend — who played a crucial role in translating the African words from the family’s oral history, preserved through seven generations. Ebou Manga was also instrumental in taking Alex Haley to The Gambia for the first time, which ultimately led to the discovery of Kunta Kinteh’s descendants in the village of Juffureh. Roots became one of the world’s most significant social phenomena, inspiring families around the globe to trace their own origins. Alex Haley became a tireless ambassador, traveling and speaking worldwide, encouraging people to seek, discover, and celebrate their ancestral heritage. After Alex Haley’s untimely death in 1992, his son Bill Haley, Sr. and grandson Bill Haley, Jr. honored his legacy two years later by partnering with McDonald’s to sponsor the Haley Family’s Adventure to the Homeland — a week-long tour to Kunta Kinteh’s ancestral village of Juffureh, greater Gambia, and Senegal. Bill Jr. continued to honor his Kinteh ancestor and grandfather by returning to The Gambia for the International Roots Festival in 2016 and again in early 2023 with Malick Manga to celebrate seven major Roots-related anniversaries. He also introduced five technology transfer initiatives focused on Sustainable Housing, Education, Healthcare, Agriculture and Cultural Tourism to benefit the people of The Gambia. Inspired by the upcoming 50th anniversary of Roots the book and miniseries in 2026 and 2027, Bill Haley, Jr. is drawing upon his twelve years of experience creating memorable experiences for families as a cast member at Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California to fulfill his generational assignment as co-founder of a newly formed nonprofit, The Inherited Roots Project to honor and share the legacy and impact of his grandfather Alex Haley’s literary contributions. And most importantly, to inspire the African diaspora, and generations of people young and old from every corner of the globe to explore, discover, and embrace the ancestral connections back to their homeland.. their ROOTS.
