Below, a golden crescent of sand hugs the shoreline, framed by cliffs that seem to guard the village like ancient sentinels. The scent of salt and seaweed drifts up on the breeze, mingling with the faint aroma of fish and chips from the harbourfront. The beach is alive with movement—surfers riding the white-crested waves, children digging channels in the sand, and the occasional dog sprinting gleefully into the shallows. At one end, the harbour lies quiet, its stone walls weathered by centuries of storms, once busy with ships laden with copper ore and coal, now sheltering only a few fishing boats and pleasure craft. If you follow the cliff paths, the wind picks up and the sea roars below, gulls circling in the updrafts. From the headlands, you can see Gull Rock standing defiantly offshore, waves bursting against it in great white plumes. Inland, traces of Cornwall’s mining past hide among the gorse—old tramway tracks, ruined engine houses, and mossy walls that whisper of another age. Back in the village, life moves gently. A handful of cafés serve cream teas, and the pub’s windows glow warmly as the light fades.
