NOTE: The intro song, 'Scatterlings of Africa' by Johnny Clegg, is not licensed to play on YouTube, so the audio doesn't start until 01:35. Waves of Jewish immigrants from Lithuania arrived in South Africa at the end of the 19th century and built thriving communities across the country. Working as traders, retailers, hoteliers for the copper mining industry and even ostrich farmers, they became an integral part of South African life. Later, some of the Jewish population also became involved in anti-apartheid activities. Overall, they have created a rich, cultural heritage, stretching from Irma Stern in the early 20th century to William Kentridge today. In addition to our special report in the Summer 2025 issue of JR, we found out more about past and present Jewish life in South Africa in this online event with special guests: – Albie Sachs, groundbreaking human rights activist and lawyer, who experienced life changing injuries when his car was bombed by the Security Services; – Leigh Sussman, researcher, stylist and performer; – Gavin Morris, director of the South African Jewish Museum. This event originally took place Monday 21 July 2025. To attend a future JR event, visit jewishrenaissance.org.uk/events
