The Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) was founded in 1970 and grew to be the largest and most powerful poor and low-income people-led community organization in the country, fighting battles to end red-lining by big banks, register voters and raise wages for working people, all until the organization was forced to shut down in 2010 following major internal tensions and attacks from the right. The ACORN Oral History Project has conducted over 150 full-length oral history interviews from former organizers and members. This session will explore important lessons learned from this project, including how ACORN built a multi-racial, member-led, national organization, and how to respond to threats from the right today.
