Happy Posthumous Birthday to Kelly Groucutt who was born on this date in 1945 and who, sadly, passed away in 2009. “Sweet Talkin’ Woman” by ELO off of their “Out of the Blue” album which came out in 1977 and featured Kelly Groucutt on bass. I think Kelly came up with some iconic bass lines, this being one of them. Also, he played some pretty unusual basses, namely Gibson G3 Grabbers and Ovation Magnums which weren’t often seen very much, even back when they first came on the market. I did this one a few years back and the bass was a little tough to pick out as there is A LOT going on in the song, i.e. keyboards, guitars, strings, and background vocals… If I had to do it over again, I might change a few things. I also found the “feel” of this song to be unusual in that, while it’s laid back, it is still extremely tight and on the beat. I’m playing all of the choruses as they are played on the ride out after the 2:37 point. I think the earlier choruses do something slightly different beneath the “run run” vocal line. I believe he may remain on the G note and not return to the E, as I do. I’m winging it a bit on the quick bits that are played in each chorus - first example @ 00:21. Shouldn't have hit the low G @ 00:58. The slides, like at 01:16 are all mine and are not played on the recording. I normally don’t add any embellishments to my covers and am not sure why I did on this one. I played along through the a-cappella section just to offer a better glimpse as to what I believe the bass is doing. I'm playing, as I did on the "Our House" cover, the "Fender Classic Series '70s Precision Bass" which is, essentially, a Precision with a J-Bass neck. I had the J-Bass bridge position p/u installed after I bought the bass. I think these were around for a short time back in 2010... or so?
