DAY 2 Ugie to Port St Johns Langeni Pass on Two Wheels Capturing Beauty and Adventure of South Africa's Mountain Roads - Part 3 As you start your descent from Ugie, you are greeted by the majestic beauty of the Drakensberg Mountains. The air is crisp and clean, carrying with it the scent of wildflowers and pine trees. The road snakes its way down the mountainside, offering panoramic views of the valleys below. The Langeni Pass is the newest major tarred pass in South Africa construction of which was completed in 2008. The pass descends an impressive 751m down the escarpment through the Langeni Forest. Riding from Ugie down the Langeni Pass offers a mesmerizing journey through the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. The Langeni Pass is renowned for its scenic beauty, winding roads, and breathtaking landscapes. The pass was built mainly to facilitate the transport of timber from the forests surrounding Ugie to the Merenski Mill near the base of the mountain range. This mountain pass has seen numerous accidents over its relatively short life clearly evident from the damage to barriers and walls that line the more dangerous sections of this steep 1:10 gradient pass. Modern engineering is evident throughout this pass, with the most impressive feature, being a 235 metre long viaduct, over a section of the indigenous forest. As you navigate the twists and turns of the pass, you'll notice the changing vegetation around you. Lush greenery gives way to rugged rock formations, and cascading waterfalls can be spotted in the distance during the rainy season while keeping an eye out for wildlife such as baboons, eagles, and dassies that inhabit this rugged terrain. The road itself is a mix of smooth stretches and hairpin bends, making it a thrilling ride for motorcycle enthusiasts and drivers alike. This Pass is also popular among cyclists looking for a challenging yet rewarding route. A visit to Second Beach proved rather disappointing as this once a beautiful and pristine beach, had deteriorated to such an extent, that we vowed and declared that we would never be visiting this once beautiful location every again. The Pont Holiday and Water Park Resort in Port Edward dates back to before the bridge over the Umtamvuna river was built. Hence the name of the facility. Back in the day it had rustic cottages available for hire while catering for the needs of campers, caravanners alike! The resort has apparently been upgraded recently with enhanced facilities catering for holidaymakers needs at competitive rates. Steve’s Bar and restaurant has an extensive menu and produces quality meals. It is conveniently located on the road to Second Beach and is popular with holiday makers, travellers and local residents alike.
