Langeni Pass on Two Wheels Capturing Beauty and Adventure of South Africa's Mountain Roads - Part 1 Leaving home around 8am in the morning, our first destination was to meet at the Hangar Cafe near Richmond with Kurt and Hans riding up from Westville, while I departed from Amber Valley in Howick. Based upon the distance taken from Howick the days ride would cover some 389 kilometres. The Hangar Cafe is located adjacent to the Richmond airfield and is highly rated and popular, not only with locals, but also with many regular passers-by. It serves excellent cuisine in a homely atmosphere with friendly and helpful staff. At the time in my life that I flew Microlights out of Light Flights at Cato Ridge this used to be a popular destination to drop in and have an enjoyable and tasty breakfast. Departing from the Hangar Cafe we passed through the villages of Ixopo, Umzimkulu, Clydesdale and Rietvlei to arrive at the Wimpy in Kokstad at the junction of the R617 and R56. Probably one of the best-known Wimpy’s on the entire length of the R617. Having taken on some refreshments we now headed in a more North Westerly direction into the foothills of the Drakensberg passing through Con Amore and Cedarville to arrive in Matatiele in the afternoon, to spend the night in the DeBerg self-catering establishment. The quality of accommodation is highly recommended and we have stayed over here on at least 2 or 3 occasions over the years when riding through this beautiful village. One attraction when staying over in Matatiele is their Country Club, who not only serve some enjoyable pub meals, but the atmosphere and camaraderie when visiting on a Saturday are the TVs in the pub, where locals congregate to watch sporting events with the banter that goes with it, making us feel truly at home. Along the roadside, keep an eye out for eroded sandstone formations. Over time, wind and water erosion sculpt sandstone into various shapes, including arches, hoodoos, and cliffs. These formations often exhibit striking colors, ranging from reds and oranges to yellows and browns, depending on the mineral content of the rock. This route is known for its picturesque landscapes and natural beauty. As you travel along this road, you'll encounter a variety of scenery that showcases the region's diverse terrain. Remember to drive safely and take breaks to fully appreciate the natural beauty of the Matatiele to Mclear route. Although this is a small town, there are several attractions and points of interest in and around McClear that visitors can explore including mountain hiking tours, trout fishing, bird watching, historical sites, local arts and crafts, cultural experiences, nature reserves, adventure sports and scenic drives. Overall, McClear and its surroundings with its natural beauty, outdoor activities, cultural experiences, and historical charm, making it a compelling destination for travellers seeking a peaceful retreat or an adventure-filled getaway.
