A lesser spotted eagle circles daily over Siim Sellis's farm. His father, an ornithologist, spent years shaping this landscape for the bird's needs. In southern Estonia, farmers are fighting to keep such sights from becoming memories. This short documentary explores the Kanepi kihlkund Farmer Cluster, where 14 farms spanning over 3,000 hectares are working with scientists from the Estonian University of Life Sciences. Estonia still holds fragments of natural world that have vanished elsewhere in Europe—semi-natural grasslands, rare orchids, farmland birds that have disappeared from Western Europe. Meet the farmers and scientists documenting over 75 bird species and 60 species of wild bees. Discover how native seed mixes from natural meadows provide season-long nectar for pollinators. Learn why Estonia's unique position rich in nature but pressured toward intensification makes this work both privileged and urgent. The documentary examines the cultural challenges of farmer cooperation in a country still marked by Soviet-era collectivisation, and how research on parasitoid wasps could reduce farmers' reliance on pesticides. Part of the EU Horizon 2020 FRAMEwork project, working with by the Estonian University of Life Sciences. This project established 11 pilot farmer clusters across 10 European countries to test landscape-scale approaches to managing farmland biodiversity, based on a successful UK model of 150+ clusters. @EestiMaaulikool @EUScienceInnovation @eucapnetwork LEARN MORE!
