▪︎ Rhombic-Leaf Sida (Sida rhombifolia) in Mallow Family (Malvaceae) is a weed very common in India & Sri Lanka in dry country. 'Sida' ... side meaning 'pomegranate or water lily 'adopted by Carl Linnaeus from Greek botanist Theophrastus. Specific Epithet rhombifolia describing plant's rhombic (diamond-shaped) leaves. Plant was named by Carl Linnaeus in his 1753 work Species Plantarum. Rhombic-Leaf Sida, Cuban jute, Jelly leaf, Queensland hemp • Hindi: Sahadeva सहदेव • Kannada: ಕಳ್ಳಂಗಡಲೆ Kallangadale, ಬೋಳಂಗಡಲೆ Bolangadale, ಅತಿಬಲಾ Atibalaa • Manipuri: ꯎꯍꯜ ꯎꯀꯥꯕꯤ Uhal ukabi • Tamil: Kurundotti • Malayalam: Vankuruntotti • Bengali: Svetbarela • Guajarati: Baladana • Marathi: Sadeda • Assamese: Boriala • Mizo: Kelchawngi-mai, Khingkhih-chi-khat • Nepali: सानो चिलिया Sano chilya A summer annual with Yellow flowers & very small spines at base of each leaf & branch. This plant most often occurs as a weed of peanuts, cotton & soybeans. Leaves are arranged alternately along stem, approximately 1-4.5 x 0.6-2 cm, with stalks that are less than ⅓ length of leaves. Leaves are widest at or above middle & taper toward leaf bases (rhombic) Upper half of leaves have toothed or serrated margins while remainder of leaves are untoothed. ● Flowers occur singly on flower stalks 1-2.5 cm. Flowers consist of 5 Yellow Petals that are 4-8 mm long. Some varieties may show a Reddish tint at the center. Each of 5 Petals between 6-9 mm long is somewhat asymmetric, with a larger lobe on one side. Flowers are solitary, emerging from area between stem & base of leaf stalk (petiole). ● Calyx consists of 5 sepals that are fused for about half their length. Individual Sepal lobes are triangular & acute (pointed) at tip. Outer surface is covered in short, star-shaped (stellate) hairs, giving it a velvety or woolly texture. Is often an Ashy-Green color & has 10 distinct ribs. ● Many stamens join at their base to form a tube, which surrounds Pistil in center of the flower. This formation is described as monadelphous. Numerous, free filaments branch out from top of Staminal column. Column itself is hairy. Many anthers are borne at ends of filaments, completing Stamen. 5 pale Yellow Petals are also fused to base of Staminal tube. Style, also enclosed within Staminal tube, is divided into 10 to 14 branches. ● Ovary is superior, multilocular & made of fused Carpels. Polycarpellary (made of several carpels) & multilocular (containing several chambers, or locules). A typical range is 6 to 10 carpels. ● Fruit is a small, dark Brown, dry, globular structure that is 5-6 mm in diameter. It consists of several wedge-shaped segments called mericarps, which typically have two barbed spines (awns) at apex. Fruit is enclosed by persistent calyx & splits to release individual mericarps, which are covered in fine barbs to facilitate their dispersal by clinging to animal fur & clothing, as well as by other means like water or machinery. Seedlings with 2 heart-shaped cotyledons, small spines that occur at base of each leaf petiole & 'rhombic' leaves are all characteristics that help in identification of Rhombic-Leaf Sida. Has significant medicinal applications for which it is cultivated throughout India. Pounded leaves are used to relieve swelling, fruits are used to relieve headache, mucilage is used as an emollient. Its root is used as an anticrotalic, a serum is prepared against venom of rattlesnakes & black widow spiders. ___ 🌹☆¹⁵ Order Malvales • 7504, 359 •⁵ Family Malvaceae • 5556, 257 - Mallow, Bhindi ◇¹ Subfamily Bombacoideae • 211, 22, T⁶ ◇² Subfamily Brownlowioideae • 94, 10 ◇³ Subfamily Byttnerioideae • 819, 26, T⁴ ◇⁴ Subfamily Dombeyoideae • 412, 15 ◇⁵ Subfamily Grewioideae • 781, 24, T² ◇⁶ Subfamily Helicteroideae • 148, 12, T² ◇⁷ Subfamily Malvoideae • 2402, 129, T⁴ ◇⁸ Subfamily Matisioideae • 139, 3 ◇⁹ Subfamily Sterculioideae • 494, 13 ◇¹⁰ Subfamily Tilioideae • 56, 3, T² ___ ◇⁷ Subfamily Malvoideae • 2402, 129, T⁴ ■¹ Tribe Gossypieae • 139, 13 ■² Tribe Hibisceae • 906, 38 ■³ Tribe Malveae • 1351, 75, ST² □¹ Subtribe Abutilinae • 777, 39 □² Subtribe Malvinae • 574, 36 ■⁴ Tribe Pentaplareae • 6, 3 ___ ■³ Tribe Malveae • 1351, 75, ST² □¹ Subtribe Abutilinae • 777, 39 □² Subtribe Malvinae • 574, 36 ___ □¹ Subtribe Abutilinae • 777, 39 ▪︎ Genus Abutilon • 167 - Indian Mallows Akrosida • 2 Allobriquetia • 3 Allosidastrum • 4 Allowissadula • 9 Anoda • 24 Bakeridesia • 20 Bastardiastrum • 8 Bastardiopsis • 6 Batesimalva • 5 Billieturnera • 1 - Copper Sidas Bordasia • 1 Briquetia • 2 Callianthe • 49 Corynabutilon • 7 Cristaria • 20 Dendrosida • 6 Dirhamphis • 2 Fryxellia • 1 Gaya • 38 Herissantia • 5 Hochreutinera • 2 Horsfordia • 4 Krapovickasia • 5 Lecanophora • 7 Malvella • 4 Meximalva • 2 Neobaclea • 1 Periptera • 5 Pseudabutilon • 19 Rhynchosida • 2 Ripariosida • 1 Robinsonella • 16 Sida • 278 - Sidas 🌼 Sidasodes • 2 Sidastrum • 8 Spirabutilon • 1 Tetrasida • 4 Wissadula • 36 ___
