Episode # 5302 A FAMILY OUT OF US Original airdate: 9/27/53 A mother tries to make up for her husband’s lack of interest in their son by enrolling him in the Boy Scouts. In a dramatic tribute, this story outlines some of the good works and influence done by the American Boy Scout movement. Co-staring Lurene Tuttle, a popular character actress who made the successful transition from vaudeville to radio, and later into films & television, her most enduring impact was as one of network radio's more versatile actresses. Often appearing in 15 shows per week, comedies, dramas, thrillers, soap operas, and crime dramas, she became known as the "First Lady of Radio”. Tuttle died from cancer May 28, 1986. Kenneth Toby, who plays Loretta’s husband in this production, was a popular stage, film, and television actor who performed in hundreds of productions during a career that spanned more than half a century. In 1951, two years before this performance, Toby was cast in Howard Hawks' classic sci-fi film The Thing from Another World where he portrays Captain Patrick Hendry, an Air Force pilot who leads a scientific outpost's dogged defense against an alien portrayed by James Arness. Toby died in 2002 of natural causes at age 85 in Rancho Mirage, California. David Saber, the young Scout in this story, was a busy child performer known for roles in Mayor of the Town (1954), Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1955) and Waterfront (1954).
