Written for Theophilus and others seeking assurance of faith, Luke shows that the teachings of the Church are firmly rooted in those of Jesus, who prepared his followers to be witnesses of his resurrection. Luke views history as salvation history—God’s plan accomplished in Jesus and continued in the Church. He links the story of Jesus to real events in Jewish and Roman history, emphasizing that salvation happened within human history. Luke also portrays Christianity as a lawful and universal religion within the Roman world, presenting Pilate’s repeated declaration of Jesus’ innocence and portraying Christianity as the rightful fulfillment of Judaism. Emphasizing the Church’s ongoing mission, Luke shifts focus from the early Church’s expectation of Christ’s imminent return to daily Christian living. He stresses Jesus’ teachings on prayer, compassion, forgiveness, and care for the poor and marginalized. Luke presents Jesus as merciful toward sinners and the lowly but firm against the proud and materialistic. He highlights the role of the Holy Spirit, the importance of prayer, and Jesus’ special concern for women. Luke calls disciples to total detachment from worldly ties and complete faith in God. Those who respond with repentance and faith receive salvation, peace, and new life. Early Christian tradition identifies the author as Luke, a Syrian from Antioch, companion of Paul, and author of Acts. Not a direct eyewitness, Luke relied on earlier sources, including Mark, the sayings source Q, and unique traditions.
