MONTSERRAT 2020 - Ecology Environment Education 1st GREEN NATION

This is the animated version of the evolution of a nation as depicted on the Coat of Arms created specifically for use by the Montserrat 2020 initiative to create “The World’s 1st GREEN Nation” on Montserrat in the British West Indies, one of the Leeward Islands in the Caribbean. http://montserrat2020.org/ “Erin” and the golden harp she is holding on the outside and to the left of the shield, pays homage to the mythological Eriu and its place in Irish lore. The island first came under English control in 1632 when a group of Irish slaves settled in Montserrat. The colony ironically developed their own brutal slave trade with people brought from Africa. To the right, The Green Turtle, which nests on the beaches of the island, symbolizes the “Conserve . Protect . Educate” mission of the College. This sentiment is displayed in Latin on the Arms banner, below the shield. The flag at the lower portion of the shield depicts shared traditions with the colors of the British crown side by side with those of the symbolic all-inclusive Pan-African banner. As the College strives to educate about and encourage the use of all alternative energy sources, this is represented within the shield by the hydro-power, geothermal, wind, and solar options all existing on the island. The slave empowered sugar cane mills of old undergo a metamorphosis emerging as wind powered generators above the shield. Flying high above the shield is the Eco Flag – the widely accepted symbol of ecology, a combination of the letters ‘e’ and ‘o’ representing the environment and organisms. The Coat of Arms of Montserrat 2020, as employed by The Jane Goodall College of Arts and Sciences, rests entirely on a sand colored base in the shape of the island of Montserrat.
