Welcome to this ‘Short Preview’ of a new video I am making about ‘Remembering the Lost Railways of Dumfries’. Running Time 4 minutes & 56 seconds. The Beeching Cuts, implemented in the 1960’s, significantly impacted Southern Scotland by closing numerous railway lines and stations. In this video I will be visiting the Railway Heritage Centre at Dumfries Station to learn more about the impact of these cuts on the infrastructure throughout Dumfries & Galloway. Most notably was the 73 mile ‘Port Road’ which was opened in stages between 1858 and 1862, and which closed in 1965. In its day, Dumfries Station was a major interchange with branches both to Castle Douglas and Stranraer, as well as to Lockerbie via Lochmaben. The closure of these lines were profound resulting in a significant part of Dumfries & Galloway being completely devoid of railways.
