Did the authors of the Gospels know Paul’s letters? Many scholars—including myself—think the answer is yes. In this episode, we look at why: the shared use of pneuma (spirit) as a technical Stoic and Middle Platonic concept, the way baptism and healing stories in the Gospels echo Pauline thought, and even the possibility that Luke-Acts directly reflects knowledge of Paul. We’ll also explore Gustav Volkmar’s 19th-century thesis that Paul’s own pneumatic demonstrations inspired the Gospel miracle stories, and ask whether these parallels are best explained by direct influence or simply by the shared intellectual world of the 1st-century Mediterranean.
