(3 May 1995) English/Nat The Croatian capital, Zagreb, has again been rocked by explosions - only a day after rebel Serbs hit the city with cluster bombs that killed five people. There were at least five explosions today (Wednesday) - two loud ones and three smaller ones - including a hit on a children's hospital. Once again there was panic in Zagreb's city centre as people ran for cover and air raid warning sirens sounded over the city. Emergency services rushed to respond to the attack. No-one knew when the next explosion would occur- those caught out in the open stood no chance. At least one missile struck the Academy for Dramatic Arts. Soldiers combed streets and parks searching for cluster-bomb fragments from the Serb attack. Eight kilometres from the city centre, a rocket fell on the suburb of Zitnjak. One old woman and a child were injured in the attack. Police sealed off the area to check for any unexploded bombs. Troops also checked the local children's hospital after it received a direct hit. The U-S Ambassador to Croatia, Peter Galbraith, said he was horrified by the damage. He and the Croatian Foreign Minister, Mate Granic, were escorted around the hospital -both angered by the suffering of injured babies and children. SOUNDBITE: We have a children's hospital that's been attacked, a theatre has been attacked and four-hundred children that were in the basement of this hospital. They've been put at risk from an intentional attack on a city. The only word for it is barbaric, a clear violation of international law, a clear violation of the most basic elements of human decency. Also, one should understand what has gone on with the attacks yesterday and today. These are attacks with Orkon rockets containing cluster bombs. Cluster bombs are intended for one purpose and that is to kill people. SUPERCAPTION: Peter Galbraith, U-S Ambassador to Croatia As they were escorted through the jammed wards, Granic was equally horrified but he played down suggestions of retaliation. SOUNDBITE: We don't plan now any military action but definitely Croatia will find a solution to protect others from this barbaric attack. SUPERCAPTION: Mate Granic, Croatian Foreign Minister Altogether 16 rockets have hit the Croatian capital since yesterday . People now fear this is just the start of a sustained attack by the Serbs.
