Intro to the Sermon on the Mount and Beatitudes (Matthew 5:1-3)

Jesus' Sermon on the Mount is one of the main speeches in the Gospel of Matthew and one of the most cited passages in living the Christian life. However, it is mostly Law and little Gospel, which has led some Christians to preach a social gospel instead of the Gospel of Christ's salvation. The Law (and all Christian life) should be lived in light of the love we receive from God which makes us righteous that we might live in love toward others. The Beatitudes show us this with the Gospel they present. The first Beatitude is a blessing for the poor in spirit for they shall receive the kingdom of God. Who is poor in spirit? Everyone who lacks the Spirit of God and need more of Him. Therefore, this Beatitude recognizes that we need more of God at all times if we are to live in God's kingdom.
