First Sunday in Lent part 2 (Sermon: What Is Good and Evil?)

Sermon Text: Genesis 3:2-5 Did Adam and Eve know what "evil" was before they ate from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil? On the one hand, they definitely knew what goodness was; God was supplying them with every blessing much like we experience many blessings from God through His creation and His Word. Therefore, "evil" would be what God and His blessings were not. So, on the other hand, they did not have firsthand experience of evil until they delved into evil by breaking God's command. We live in having this firsthand experience of evil as we suffer evils in this world, and goodness in all things is absent from us. Yet, we know that Eden or, better yet, the paradise to come will have no evil and only goodness. We can only imagine it, but we know the blessings that lead into it: the fruits of the new Tree of Life, Jesus' cross.
