Artis Wodehouse pianolizes a 1927 QRS piano roll duet performance by Fats Waller and James P. Johnson of Johnson's 1926 tune, If I Could Be With You (One Hour Tonight) on her foot-pump 1912 Bush & Lane player piano. This delightful selection is a collaborative piano roll duet by prolific piano roll artists/live performers/and composers James P. Johnson and Fats Waller. Waller (1904-1943) -- younger than Johnson (1894-1955) -- began as a student of Johnson, but later became a close artistic and personal colleague. Both were virtuosic piano giants. James P. Johnson is particularly credited with bridging the gap between ragtime and early jazz via his innovations which came to become known as Harlem Stride piano. Its likely that Waller was responsble for the treble embellishments, Johnson delivering the melody and bass accompaniment. The split screen shows both Wodehouse's realization in real time and the piano roll as it unfurled across the player piano's tracker bar, triggering the notes to play. The roll itself contains the words to the song (by Heny Creamer), but gives no expressive performance instructions to the pianolist. All accents, tempo fluctuations and dynamics were realized according to Wondehouse's own sensibilites.
