The High Court Criminal Division in Kampala has directed the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to fully disclose all evidence in the high-profile treason case against opposition leader Kizza Besigye and his co-accused. Appearing before Justice Emmanuel Baguma, Dr. Besigye stood alongside Obeid Lutale and Captain Denis Oola as proceedings unfolded in a packed courtroom. The trio faces serious allegations of plotting to overthrow the government of Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. Court sessions were marked by tense exchanges between defence lawyers — including Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago — and state prosecutors over delayed evidence disclosure. While the prosecution maintains that partial materials such as audio transcripts, video recordings, and witness statements have been shared, the defence argues that court-ordered timelines were ignored and full disclosure has not been made. Justice Baguma has now ordered the prosecution to complete disclosure by March 3, 2026, with the case set to return to court on March 12. Outside court, Besigye’s wife, Winnie Byanyima, criticised what she described as persecution rather than prosecution and raised concerns about political interference. Prosecutors allege the accused held meetings in Geneva, Athens, Nairobi, and Kampala to solicit funds, acquire weapons, and organise paramilitary activities — including alleged links to a foreign intelligence operative and attempts to secure advanced weaponry. This case continues to draw national and international attention as Uganda watches closely.
