Third and final guest speaker as part of MTU's Fostering Research Integrity Guest Speaker Series in 2024. Prof. Irene Díaz, University of Oviedo, presents on: "Ethics, Gender Bias, and Artificial Intelligence: Challenges and Opportunities". Outline: Artificial Intelligence (AI) is shaping decision-making processes across domains, yet its development is fraught with ethical concerns, particularly regarding embedded biases. Among these, gender bias remains a pervasive issue, often leading to inequitable outcomes and reinforcing societal stereotypes. This presentation explores the ethical implications of AI, focusing on how gender bias manifests in algorithms and datasets. The session aims to highlight actionable strategies for mitigating bias, fostering inclusive AI systems with the objective of harnessing AI’s potential while promoting fairness and equality. Speaker Bio: Prof. Diaz has been a Full Professor of Artificial Intelligence at the University of Oviedo since July 2019, Head of the Department of Computer Science from October 2020 to November 2023, and Vice-Rector for Research since November 2023. Prof. Diaz’s academic and research career has been focused on Artificial Intelligence since 1997, with scientific contributions disseminated through publications and at conferences. Prof. Diaz has also contributed to more than 20 book chapters. All these publications have been centered on two main areas: the development of theoretical models and methods for data fusion and their application in various fields such as biomedicine, agriculture, and image analysis. Prof. Diaz also works on issues related to the social impact of AI. Some of these works have been recognized with awards at leading conferences in the field.
