What is fostering panel, and why does it matter? In this video, foster carers, a fostering social worker and a panel advisor explain what fostering panel is, what happens on the day, and why panel plays such an important role in fostering. Fostering panel is the final stage of the fostering assessment process. It is a group of experienced, independent people who review assessments and make recommendations about whether someone is suitable to foster. Their role is to ensure that decisions are made safely, fairly and always with the child’s best interests at heart. You will meet a panel advisor in this video, who explains the purpose of panel and what panel members are looking for. A fostering social worker also talks through how panel works, how carers are supported before and during the process, and why panel is an important safeguard for children and young people. Foster carers then share their own experiences of going to panel. They talk honestly about how they felt beforehand, what surprised them, and how supportive the experience was. Many carers describe panel as a conversation rather than an interrogation, and an opportunity to reflect on their journey into fostering. Panel is not just something you attend once. Every year, foster carers have an annual review, which is also presented to panel. This is how panel recommends that you continue fostering for another year, ensuring that support, training and care standards remain strong for children.
