Season 1, Episode 10 – Making of TIK TOK Apartments renovation series. In this episode, I tackle one of those jobs that sounds simple… until it isn’t. I start by removing old door hardware so the washroom doors can be spray painted and upgraded with new stainless steel handles and hinges. Some of the handles came off easily, but others were so seized they had to be cut off entirely. After stripping everything down, the doors were lightly sanded and set up for spray painting to save time and get a more professional-looking finish. That’s when the problems started. The paint was coming out slow and blotchy, and no matter what I tried—cleaning the nozzle, thinning the paint, even upgrading to a bigger compressor - it didn’t improve. I bought a new spray gun, which worked great… for about ten minutes. What followed was days of trial and error, assuming the issue was just part of the process. The PVC door frames added another challenge. They required a special undercoat so the paint would actually stick, followed by a smelly oil-based finish coat. Not my favorite material to work with, but sometimes it’s the only option. After painting, the plan is to clean everything up with white trim inside and out. Once the paint work was done, I reinstalled the doors with new hinges—reducing them from three to two—and managed to get them closing almost perfectly. Before final installation, I also added new deadbolt locks for extra security. That involved carefully drilling clean, straight holes using the lock template. There were a few hiccups along the way, including a loose drill chuck and a very hot bit, but taking the time to slow down and realign everything made all the difference. This is renovation in real time — stubborn hardware, failed tools, strong smells, and a lot of patience. What should have been a straightforward job turned into hours of adjustments, problem-solving, and learning along the way. By the end of the day, the doors were painted, rehung, and fitted with new locks, bringing the building one step closer to being finished.
