Season 1, Episode 9 – Making of TIK TOK Apartments renovation series. In this episode, I tackle one of those renovation tasks that seems like a good idea… until you’re halfway through it. I start by addressing a tricky corner joint near the roof where wind-driven rain could blow in sideways. It doesn’t need to be completely sealed, but it does need protection. I add screws, fabricate a small triangular piece, and finish it off with trim to both seal the gap and make it look more polished — even if it means drilling in some awkward positions. Next comes a big experiment: spray painting the metal window bars. Because the bars are twisted and detailed, brushing them would have taken forever. The spray gun looked like a smart shortcut. To prepare, we spent hours covering windows and frames with cardboard — mostly recycled IKEA boxes — carefully taping everything off to control overspray. On October 6th, we worked straight through the rain. Luckily, the overhang protected most of the work area, even though I got soaked using the sprayer. We started at the front of the building and worked our way around to the back, navigating a very narrow space used mainly for drainage and water meters. The cardboard masking worked like a cookie cutter — moving it from window to window after each spray. Each window only took about 45 seconds to spray, but the prep time was easily 10 times longer. In the end, I’m still not convinced the spray gun actually saved time compared to brushing. That said, spraying the wrought iron railings was a win. With almost no prep and just a piece of cardboard held behind, it was fast and effective. This is renovation in real time — long days, trial and error, and learning what works (and what doesn’t). The entire job still took a full 14-hour day, but the building is one step closer to being finished. SUBSCRIBE to follow the journey as I continue transforming this property, one challenge at a time.
