Step back in time with us as we revisit _Challans 1910_—a unique annual event in the Vendee region of France where the town transforms into a living museum of early 20th-century life 🇫🇷. Each summer we head for southern France specifically to pick up the Mediterranean weather, for our two weeks holidaying in the sun. As it’s over a 24-hour journey from home in Britain to the Vendee—including the ferry trip across the English Channel—we head as far south as we can get (driving safely), then stop off for an overnight stay in a hotel in one of the cities en route, continuing our journey first thing the following morning. It’s not a mad rush down south; we meander at a steady pace, using our TomTom to avoid all toll roads, passing through numerous villages and towns (and the occasional city), often stopping for regular breaks and a bit of sightseeing. Our journey occasionally takes us off the beaten track to idyllic places where few British tourists go—and invariably the reception from the local French inhabitants is warm and welcoming. In 2010, we reached Challans late in the evening, just an hour’s drive from our final destination. It was shortly before 8pm when we found a suitable hotel. After booking in, I sat outside sipping a much-welcome cup of coffee while my wife and son explored the local vicinity looking for somewhere open to eat. They returned half an hour later to inform me that everything in Challans—nightclubs, pubs, restaurants, and cafés—shuts at 8pm. No nightlife in a city... most weird! So we made do with the light snacks we carry for travelling, and the following morning made our way to our holiday cottage. Later that week, we spotted a poster advertising *Challans 1910*—a centenary-themed event where the city is closed to traffic and locals dress in period costume to celebrate life as it was a hundred years ago. We attended, and it was a fantastic day out, as captured in the video we uploaded at the time. We returned to the Vendee this year, staying in a holiday cottage in the Breton-Vendee marshes between Pornic and Noirmoutier, not far from Challans—specifically so we could explore the area and revisit *Challans 1910*, which is now an annual event. Obviously, not being a centenary as it was in 2010, it wasn’t quite as glamorous—but it was still a great day out that we all thoroughly enjoyed. This video offers just a glimpse of the events and activities from the day. 📍 Location: Challans, Vendee, France 📅 Event: Annual “Challans 1910” Festival 🚗 Travel Tip: Avoid toll roads and enjoy the scenic route! 🎥 This video is part of our personal vlog series exploring travel, history, wildlife & DIY across Britain and Europe.
