Krithi: Sri Krishnam bhaja manasa Ragam: Thodi Thalam: Adi Composer: Muthuswami Dikshidar Vocal : M L Vasanthakumari M. L. Vasanthakumari (Madras Lalithangi Vasanthakumari), born on 3 July 1928 in Madras, was one of the most celebrated Carnatic vocalists of the 20th century and a leading figure of the “female trinity” alongside M. S. Subbulakshmi and D. K. Pattammal. Born into a musical family to Kuthanur Ayya Swamy Iyer and Lalithangi ( both musicians) she was exposed early to classical traditions, especially the Purandaradasa kritis her mother performed and taught. Trained by the legendary G. N. Balasubramaniam, she developed a distinctive style known for its clarity, creativity, mastery of complex ragas, and brilliant improvisation. She popularised many rare ragas and helped bring Haridasa compositions, particularly the Devaranamas of Purandara Dasa, into the mainstream concert stage, much like T. Brinda’s contribution to Kshetrayya Padams and M. S. Subbulakshmi’s popularisation of Annamacharya kritis. Alongside her classical career, she was also a successful playback singer in South Indian films. Among her many disciples were Sudha Raghunathan and Charumathi Ramachandran, who carried forward her musical legacy. Vasanthakumari received numerous honours, including the Padma Bhushan, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, and the prestigious title of Sangeetha Kalanidhi. Married to R. Krishnamurthy and mother to the noted actress Srividya, she remained dedicated to music until her passing on 31 October 1990, leaving behind a profound and enduring impact on the world of Carnatic music. The composer urges the mind to always worship Krishna, the child Gopala who protects devotees. He is described as the remover of sorrow, fear, and ignorance, and as the one who grants liberation from worldly bondage. The krithi ends by praising Him as the reclining Lord of Guruvayur and the supreme ruler of the universe, with lotus-like eyes.
