Pulling the knee into your chest and lifting the leg high is key in building the proper power for the Sanda sidekick. You want as straight of a line as possible for your kicks extension. This drill helps you build the feeling of rotating your hips all the way over, and drawing your knee tightly towards your chest. You want to pay close attention to the direction of your heel. In Sanda, we think to the side kick much like a spear. You want the head of the spear to point directly to the target, from you knee, down your shin, to the bottom of your foot. The more direct the line of attack through the extension of your kick the more power will be transferred into your opponent. When chambering the leg, grab and hold tightly your leg at the shin. One hand holds tight by the ankle and pulls up slightly to help open up the hips and create the angle for the chamber, while the other holds below the knee to pull inward and stretch the glutes to help increase range of motion. The hand of the same side leg chambering should be on top while the back hand should grab underneath. Once the position feels comfortable you can start to extend the kick and re-chamber back to the same position. Remember the retraction of your kick is just as important as the extension! This helps to prevent power loss and help defensively for kick catches. Try this drill out and let us know how you do! For more tips, tricks, and training methods check us out on Patreon!
