Lindgren: I'd like to ask about your style of playing. People say you play so many notes, and sometimes it sounds as if you are "angry." How do you feel about that? Coltrane: No, I’m not angry. I’m just trying to express what I’m looking for more fully, that’s all. Lindgren: Many people feel that you are trying to do too many things at once. Coltrane: That may be true. I feel like I might be overdoing it sometimes myself. I’m trying to express more things at once than I used to, and as a result, the sounds overlap. I’m still in a stage of exploration, and to be honest, I might not even know exactly what I’m looking for yet. Lindgren: Has playing with Miles Davis changed anything for you? Coltrane: Yes, he gives me a lot of freedom. By playing with him, I’ve learned how to find the "space" to shape my own ideas.
