The 22nd talk of the APS talks series, 'Vernacular Architecture in Malta: The razzett, troglodyte houses and other dwellings', was presented by H.E. Amb. Dr. George A. Said-Zammit on 28th October 2021. This lecture focused on one of the main pillars of Malta’s cultural legacy: vernacular architecture. For a long period of time, this branch of local architecture was never studied properly, consequently many ethnic buildings, such as the razzett and the girna, were left in complete abandonment. It was in more recent times that scholars of Maltese architecture started to appreciate and investigate the relevance of Maltese vernacular architecture within the context of Malta’s national identity. The island’s vernacular buildings comprise a wide selection of structures to include the razzett, the girna, the wayside churches, troglodyte dwellings, and so on. The main objective of this lecture was to provide an overview of these different structures and how their dwellers (or users) made the best use of the immediate and remote physical environment and available resources.
