Over the past days a number of White Storks were observed roosting in Malta. Five of these beautiful birds stopped in Malta to take a break from their migration journey. The first group of three was seen in Birżebbuġa by the Freeport and spent a couple of days in the area. As soon as these left, a second group of two White Storks was reported in Żurrieq where they settled on the old mill which can be found in the Nigret area. These two were ringed and BirdLife Malta managed to trace their origin thanks to their rings. The investigation carried out by BirdLife Malta revealed that these two young White Storks were ringed on 1st September 2017 in Prijedor (Bosnia & Herzegovina) where they were hand-reared by Jovica Sjeničić, a prominent ornithologist and conservationist. The birds are siblings originating from a nest situated in the village of Vrbaška. Their parents were most probably shot or poisoned and the brood was abandoned, so Jovica and her team took the young storks down and started to take care of them. The birds were last seen in the area of Prijedor ten days ago, around the 17th September. The birds were ringed with Belgrade (Serbia) rings since Bosnia & Herzegovina does not have its own ringing scheme. Storks are always expected at this time of year. Just like it did in previous years, BirdLife Malta dispatched a team to watch over these birds and also demanded the police to keep a round-the-clock watch over the birds. All five White Storks in fact left Malta safely. Footage by BirdLife Malta, editing by Veerle van Werde.
