How to play Laurel & Hardy's LONESOME PINE on Ukulele and make it sound real! Additional videos and lyric sheet available at / lowgukechannel . Play along with the original Laurel & Hardy clip from their 1937 movie "Way Out West". For this lesson I've dropped the original soundtrack by one semitone so that the Uke can be played in the key of F. This gives the accompaniment a much more authentic feel. #LonesomePine #LaurelandHardy #LowGString MY CONNECTION TO THE SONG - A PERSONAL NOTE I remember watching this song clip on TV as a child. The childlike facial expressions from Stan & Ollie were so captivating you just wanted to watch it again (impossible of course at the time). You may not be aware that Stan & Ollie's last live stage performances took place in the Royal Marine Hotel, Dun Laoghaire (pronounced Dunleary) less than 20 miles south of the tree I'm leaning against in this video! By sheer coincidence my father ran a business on the same street and was good friends with the hotel owner. On a Saturday afternoon I used to play football with his sons in their back garden. It's only recently I became aware that I was actually visiting "hallowed ground", where L&H delivered their final live performances in the early 50's. I believe this is featured in the recent Stan & Ollie movie (2018). Who would've thought decades later I could play along with them on a global platform like YouTube! How mad is that! SONG FACTS The song was first published in 1913, lyrics by Ballard MacDonald and music by Harry Carroll. I'm sure it only hit the big time with L&H's performance. The Avalon Boys feature in the movie also, most notably singing "At the Ball, That's All" as the backdrop to L&H's amazing dance routine outside the saloon. Walter Trask of the Avalon Boys plays guitar in the original soundtrack and Chill Willis sings the baratone segment mimed by Stan. Rosina Lawrence sings the falsetto ending after Stan is hit on the head with a mallet. Would you believe "The Trail of the Lonesome Pine" by L&H was released as a single in 1975 and it reached No. 2 in the UK Singles Chart.
