One of Taiwan's 12 remaining diplomatic allies, Palau is a tiny nation with a population of fewer than 20,000 people. That makes the country in the western Pacific Ocean even smaller than an average borough in Taiwan. Palau was a US-administered territory after World War II until 1986, when it entered into the Compacts of Free Association (COFA) agreement with the US, joining the Marshall Islands and Micronesia. During CNA correspondent Victoria Jen’s visit to Palau, she witnessed the efforts and resources that have been poured in by Taiwan to keep the island country on its side. This amid mainland China's expanding reach in the region.
