Musescore and other programs that play from notation have much less control of dynamics and articulation than a Digital Audio Workstation. So can they compete when it comes to musical expression? Let’s start with a single instrument: the violin. Jono Buchanan has a brilliant YouTube channel on making music in a Digital Audio Workstation. In his first episode on orchestral programming, he showed how to play a solo violin with the expressive control of a real violinist. So is it possible to find an equivalent process for a notation program? More important, how good is the result? John uses Musesounds to track Jono’s process and produce his best approximation to Jono’s violin rendition. On the way he plays The Sailor’s Hornpipe.
