La Fée aux Choux (1900), directed by pioneering filmmaker Alice Guy-Blaché, is often cited as one of the first narrative films ever made. In this video, we present the surviving 1900 version of La Fée aux Choux (The Cabbage Fairy), along with a brief history of the film’s production, its alternate versions, and the legacy of Alice Guy-Blaché — one of cinema’s first directors and arguably the first woman filmmaker. Originally produced while Guy-Blaché was working for Gaumont in France, the film depicts a whimsical fairy discovering babies in a cabbage patch — a simple fantasy premise that marked a revolutionary step toward narrative storytelling in cinema. ⚠️ Important Historical Note: Multiple versions of La Fée aux Choux exist (1896, 1900, and a later 1902 remake sometimes titled Sage-femme de première classe). Film historians continue to debate the dating of the earliest version, but the 1900 edition remains one of the most widely circulated surviving prints. Alice Guy-Blaché would go on to direct or produce over 1,000 films, run her own studio in the United States, and shape the grammar of early cinema — though her contributions were largely erased from mainstream film history for decades. If you’re interested in early cinema, silent film history, lost films, or the pioneers who shaped storytelling on screen, this is essential viewing. #LaFeeAuxChoux #AliceGuyBlache #SilentFilm #FilmHistory #EarlyCinema #WomenInFilm #FilmPreservation #CinemaStudies #CabbageFairy #publicdomainfilms La Fee aux Choux 1900 Alice Guy Blanche Alice Guy Blache film First narrative film First woman filmmaker Early cinema history Silent film 1900 Cabbage Fairy film Gaumont film history Public domain silent film Women pioneers in film History of film narrative 1896 La Fee aux Choux Sage femme de premiere classe Birth of cinema
