Today was another amazing day of brilliant roads! Finally, we had sunshine and rode the Blue Ridge Parkway. Welcome to day four of our Tail of the Dragon Tour. The day started on the chilly side, at 8° just outside of Waynesboro, VA. At least it wasn't raining and we were going to ride the world famous Blue Ridge Parkway! We were on the road early because the bathrooms at the campground were locked and you needed a code to get in. The office was closed and we were the only tenters in the park. Doh, No showers for us today! I wasn't concerned with that because I was worried about the Tiger. It didn't start last night on our way to dinner! Fortunately, after much cursing and a little bit of troubleshooting we determined that my fob for the keyless ignition is malfunctioning. We consulted the owner's manual and got it started using a work-around with the standard key. Fortunately, there is a Triumph dealer in Roanoke and we were planning on stopping there for lunch today anyway. I sent them a text last night to let them know that I was coming. This morning, I got a text from them saying that they are closed on Monday, so they couldn't help. But then miraculously, like the Panthers beating the Bruins, my bike started. No rhyme or reason. Woo-hoo! On the Parkway, we immediately climbed and the temperatures quickly dropped to 6°, at which point I put on my down jacket under my riding gear. I bought that jacket in Baie Comeau, Quebec last year on our trip and it has been one of the smartest purchases that I have ever made. Checkout Day four of my Trans Labrador Highway playlist and look for the Beyond the Asphalt video for that story. Properly dressed, in brilliant sunshine I could truly experience the Parkway which was absolutely stunning. Everything was just perfect: great surface, spectacular views and more curves and bends than I have ever ridden in one day. Even the detours were remarkable! Just north of the aptly named Buena Vista, the Parkway was closed and we took the detour on US60. WHAT A ROAD THAT WAS!!! Take it even if the Parkway is open. The road corkscrewed down the mountain at an exhilarating pitch and the corners were so tight that when I looked in my mirrors Spike looked like Marc Marquez at Laguna Seca. Muzzy compared it to a bobsled run. We left Buena Vista on VA550 and it too was amazing. Back on the Parkway we continued south and the skies became overcast. The temperatures were comfortable 10° in the valleys and were a gusty 6° at the 4,000 foot peaks. We were again detoured just south of Roanoke where we decided to grab groceries and head to a local campsite. We saw signs for the Explore Park campground and made that our destination. When we got there it turned out that it wasn't open for the season and even if it was they didn't allow tents. Bummer. The next campsite was 50 miles away! So we hopped on our stallions and headed to Chantilly Farm Family Campground. That 50 miles was extraordinary! I hope that the Tail of the Dragon will wow us like this road did! Virginia should change its state motto to Virginia is for MOTORCYCLE lovers! When we got to the campground it was just 8° and the skies looked ominous, so we decided to grab a bunkie instead of setting up our tents. I am so glad that we did. The wind has picked up and there were sporadic rain showers all evening. The Campground is now called the Floyd Family Campground and it is fantastic. I highly recommend it as a place to stay if you are traveling on the Blue Ridge Parkway. When we arrived there was absolutely no one else on the 200 acre camping and event ground! The highlight of the evening was the dinner that we cooked up using two pots on two camp stoves. The recipe for the Three Amigos feast is : 1 package of Johnsonville Spicy Italian sausage, 1 package of frozen stir fry vegetables, rice noodles, Lipton beef soup mix and a bag of Caesar salad. Cook the sausage and then add the veggies simmer for 10 minutes. Then cook the noodles in the soup broth. Then serve with the salad. It was brilliant! Good night from Floyd County. I love you all. Of course I love Barb the most.
