Abundant Grace Community Church Sunday Worship Service LIVESTREAM Vitals of a Disciple- LOVE The Love of God is the foundation from which our understanding and expression of love should spring forth. “What is Love?” – We live in a world that is constantly trying to define what love is. Their definition of love is ever changing. The ever-changing cultural expressions of love disintegrate against the backdrop of the unchanging expression of the love of God. Part I: God tells us He is loving- Exodus 34: 5-7 5 The Lord descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the Lord. 6 The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, 7 keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children's children, to the third and the fourth generation.” Merciful: Full of compassion Gracious: Giving or bestowing something to someone who is underserving. Longsuffering: Slow to anger “…Forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin…” The use of all three descriptions for wrongdoing here emphasizes that there is no sin God is not able to forgive.” “…but who will by no means clear the guilty…” If you chose not to love Him and obey His commandments, you will be guilty “…visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children's children, to the third and the fourth generation.” Not a reference to generational curses Addresses the way in which God deals with the sin of His chosen people as a whole. Part II: God shows us He is loving Romans 5: 8- “ But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” A deeper understanding of God’s love, is fueled by our awareness of His wrath. The moment sin entered the world through Adam, the shedding of blood became the only way God’s righteous judgment would be satisfied. Romans 3:23-26 23“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God's righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. 26 It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.” God’s ultimate expression of love toward us, is found in Jesus Christ. He was sinless, yet He took on all our sin and shame to be the propitiation (atonement) for our sins, so that we can stand before God, justified by the righteousness of Christ. Romans 5:8 But God commended his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Part III: God calls us to be loving Two sides to love as a vital sign of a disciple: 1. Inward Expression: How does our understanding of God’s love alter who we are? To know the love of God is to be transformed In our pursuit to love God, we will naturally grow in our ability to reflect His love to others • Repentance: God’s love is what draws us to repentance • Faith: The love of God is secured to us through Jesus Christ • Perseverance: Being able to stand in the perfect love of God allows us to discard our fears, freeing us up to walk through any trial 2. Outward Expression: We are called to be a reflection of God’s love to a lost and dying world. We should desire for others to know God’s love in the same way we have experienced His love. These two things lead to: Mission- carrying out the love of God to a lost and dying world. Repentance God’s love draws us to repentance. 1 John 4:19- We love him because he first loved us. Faith Our salvation is secured through or faith in Jesus Christ. Ephesians 2:8- For by grace are ye saved through faith. Perseverance We press on in our Christian walk, persevering to the end. Romans 8:26- Likewise, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We see each part of the Trinity at work in these vital signs, and love is interwoven through it all.
