It’s easy to hold on to negative experiences for longer than necessary... as one of life’s biggest challenges is learning to let go of emotional baggage... even when it’s stopping us from moving forward. This is because we get trapped in a paralysing loop of negativity... constantly reliving and rehashing our experiences until they become all consuming. The key to escaping this trap is letting go, making a conscious decision to release the past and embrace the future... by focusing on the things you can control... instead of dwelling on those you can’t. So, how do you let go of negative experiences? 1.Challenge Yourself According to Buddha... “No matter how hard the past, you can always begin again”... so ask yourself how you benefit from reliving the past? The answer can help you understand that carrying emotional baggage doesn’t serve you in any way... as the more energy you give to the past, the more it will impact your future... So, use this knowledge to help detach yourself from the experience and start looking forward. You can’t change what’s already happened so don’t let it define who you are... instead learn from the experience... accept how it made you feel... and move on by looking for new possibilities and taking action. 2.SUMO - Shut Up and Move On This is great advice for anyone who has the propensity to over-analyse... after all kicking around the past is not only exhausting; it can also be really boring! 3. Write yourself a letter Explore your negative experiences by writing down what happened... as it’s a great way to purge yourself of any residual negativity, work through inner conflicts, process feelings and generate acceptance. Once written, destroy the letter, making a conscious decision to let go of the experience at the same time. 4. Create new memories Take your mind off the past by focusing on the present and dreaming about the future, recognising that positive change requires you to let go of anything which no longer serves you, to make space for new memories and new opportunities, as you strive to create a new chapter in your life’s journey. 5. Stop Should-ing Yourself How often do you say “should have”, “would have” or “could have”? These phrases generate a negative mindset which keeps us trapped in the past and leads to regret and disappointment. To combat these feelings, remember that you’re in control of your thoughts and as you can’t time travel to fix the past, try to stay in the present, practicing mindfulness to find joy in the here and now. In summary... It’s human nature to dwell on the past, but when this behaviour impacts our future and influences our present, we create an unhealthy cycle of inner conflict. To break free, we have to let go... consciously choosing to focus on new experiences, by releasing what no longer serves us and embracing new opportunities along the way... after all when one door closes, another opens!
