#portosanto #madeira #portugal #cover #feelinggood Porto Santo is another Portuguese island that I visited one month ago, during my stay in Portugal. The island belongs to the Madeira archipelago, being located 42km north-east of Madeira island, where I took the ferry boat from. I only spent one day in Porto Santo, since the island is significantly smaller (11km long and 6km wide), though certainly not less beautiful than Madeira. I almost covered its entire length by walking along the 9km long golden sandy beach barefoot, from the port, in the south-east, to Ponta da Calheta, at the south-west end of the island, which is characterized by its spectacular rock formations. It was cloudy and rainy for the first half of the day. However, by the time I got to Calheta, the clear blue sky allowed me to perceive the island in its true, vivid colors. I imagined that if I got to the tip of the island I could enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view. However, the closest viewpoint created for tourists was 3.5km away from where I was and I only had one hour left to return to the ferry boat on time. I knew that was not enough for me to walk 1.5 km back to the center of the island and then turn left to walk 2km up the hill in the opposite direction, then return to the port. Thus, I decided to get to the top in a less conventional way, which google maps had not yet dared to recommend for safety reasons. I was determined to climb the hill around 200m high. I must admit the hillside did not seem to be so steep when I was standing at its bottom. Nevertheless, I realized shortly after I started that the climb would not be so easy, since every rock I tried to hold on to remained in my hand. Despite this, I didn't want to give up. It is not in my nature. Moreover, the time pressure and the rucksack I was carrying would only make my ascent more difficult. Therefore, I took the latter off and just threw it ahead of me while I was making my way up. I decided not to look behind me as the steep hillside looked rather intimidating. I only looked up and prayed that I would get to the ferry safely and on time. Closer to the top, the rocks were bigger and steadier. So were my hopes of getting there. In a previous personal post on facebook, I talked about another adventure I had climbing on a 750m high mountain in mainland Portugal. I said that there is a big reward at the end of every difficult path we take in life. This is why I like to venture out alone on paths that are not easily accessible but ultimately lead to the top. But what if there is no beaten track ahead of you yet? Then make your own! I was right! This climb was worth it as well! The panoramic view was magnificent, offering both the perspective of the uninhabited Ilheu da Cal (i.e "limestone islet") and the perspective of the south cost of Porto Santo, with its long, golden beach, emphasized by the turquoise blue sea. Instead of placing a flag on top of the hill, I marked my climb with a song, as usual. Then, I walked along the ridge towards the official tourist viewpoint. It felt like returning to civilization. But I no longer felt like only a tourist. I walked the 1.5km down toward the main city Vila Baleira and then called a taxi to take me to the port. My prayers were answered! I took the ferry boat back to Madeira Island safely and on time.
