As the lunch hour began students opted instead for chicken fingers, sloppy joes, or a yogurt packed choice with crackers and string cheese.Cafeteria manager April Burkhart said it's undeniable, kids miss their peanut butter. "They've asked for them all day and we've had to tell them there's a recall on them and we don't know when we'll have them back available."Smuckers launched a voluntary recall on certain lots of Uncrustables sandwiches. These come through food service channels, not retail grocery stores. And the peanut butter is associated with the Sunland, Inc. recall due to possible salmonella contamination. One of those lot numbers arrived at Hamilton County Schools. Orchard Knob and all other schools have clearly marked the boxes off limits until further notice. One other Advance Pierre peanut butter cups have also made the recall list.Carolyn Childs, Hamilton County Director of School Nutrition, said they're taking no chances. "So we're taking the precaution then of holding all peanut butter products, both what we get commercially as well as through commodity just to protect the students."The next step: the Farm Service Agency is working with vendors to confirm the affected products. At that point the USDA will change the hold to a recall. School systems will then report and if necessary dispose of peanut butter products.
