CHARITY MATCH: Derbyshire Community vs Sands United (Derby)

A special charity football match at Alfreton Town's ground as newly formed Derbyshire Community FC took on Sands United Derby, raising money for bereaved parents. I was invited to this emotional and meaningful event by Adam from Derbyshire Community, where I had the chance to speak with captain Alex and chairman Chris about the club's formation and the importance of today's game. The match began with a beautiful tribute, as players from both teams walked out with balloons, gathering around the centre circle while "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" played over the tannoy. The balloons were then released into the sky in a moving moment of unity and remembrance. On the pitch, it was a closely contested battle with Sands United breaking the deadlock around the 30-minute mark with a well-taken goal. Derbyshire fought back in the second half and equalized from the penalty spot just after the hour. Sands United responded with a penalty of their own late in the game to take a 2-1 lead. Drama followed right at the death as Derbyshire thought they’d equalized from a free-kick scramble, but the referee didn’t give it, despite hesitation from the assistant referee.
