Liszt's three beautiful nocturnes known as the Liebesträume were composed in 1850. The third Liebestraum is the most popular and is one of the most celebrated and recognisable works in the piano repertoire. What is less well-known about these pieces is that they were originally songs. So in fact, one of Liszt's most familiar 'original' piano works is actually a transcription! However, this kind of process was common for Liszt, who spent a lifetime not only transcribing and arranging the works of others, but reworking his own earlier material. The piano in this video is a Bechstein manufactured in 1901. Liszt himself owned Bechsteins and was very fond of them. His B Minor Sonata was premiered on a Bechstein in the 1850s. This particular piano was built just 15 years after Liszt's death.
