Liszt Réminiscences de Don Juan

Liszt composed his epic fantasy on Mozart’s Don Giovanni in 1841. He creates a masterful symphonic poem for piano, summing up the mood and impact of one of the most powerful operas in the repertoire. Liszt uses the famous seduction duet, “Là ci darem la mano”, as the basis for a spectacular set of variations, and the Don’s “Champagne Aria” provides a whirlwind finale. But it is material from the opera’s final pages, the so-called “Commendatore scene” that pervades the entire work and gives it its unsettling quality, reminding us of perhaps the most chilling conclusion in all opera. The work might also be seen as something of a musical self-portrait for Liszt, who enjoyed a reputation as something of a Don Juan himself.
