MALIBU — May 15, 2025 — Santa Monica Closeup continued its coverage of post-fire recovery efforts along the Pacific Coast Highway on Thursday, documenting demolition operations, infrastructure restoration, and restricted corridor activity from Pacific Palisades to Malibu. As part of Phase Two of the federal wildfire response, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) led demolition efforts at multiple fire-damaged properties along the Malibu coastline. In addition, private contractors were observed clearing homes on behalf of property owners who opted out of federal assistance. The coastal corridor remains closed to the general public. Access is strictly controlled, with National Guard troops, LAPD officers, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies, and California Highway Patrol personnel stationed at key checkpoints. CHP continues to enforce a 25 mph speed limit while restricting passage to credentialed press, first responders, authorized personnel, residents with permits, and essential recovery crews. With heavy equipment moving daily through the region, the PCH has effectively become a recovery artery—supporting the demolition of unstable structures and the restoration of vital utilities, including electricity, water, and communications infrastructure. The Palisades Fire, which began on January 7, 2025, consumed over 23,000 acres and destroyed nearly 7,000 structures across Pacific Palisades and Malibu before being fully contained on January 31.
