Dr Jawed Qureshi covers FLEXIBILITY METHOD for Pin-Jointed Statically Indeterminate Structures. • structural mechanics The Flexibility Method is an engineering technique used to analyse indeterminate structures, meaning they have more supports and members than needed to stay in place. This method breaks down the complex behaviour of such structures into manageable components, making it easier to understand how they respond to loads and deformations. Engineers start by assessing the flexibility of each joint in the structure. Flexibility coefficients are calculated to quantify this property for each joint, indicating how much a joint will move or deform when subjected to a certain load. Once the loads are applied to the structure, engineers use these flexibility coefficients to predict how much each joint will move or deform. Compatibility equations ensure that all parts of the structure fit together properly after deformation while maintaining equilibrium. By solving these equations, engineers can determine the unknown forces and movements within the structure, helping them understand how the excess supports or members affect its overall behaviour. Essentially, the Flexibility Method is a systematic approach to analysing complex structures, breaking them down into simpler, more flexible components, and solving equations to determine their responses to external forces, making it a valuable tool in structural engineering.
