Part 2 of the Polygram release 'Bullseye' has 4 very different tracks; two of which were worldwide smashes, the other two regionally successful here in Australia. '2 Hot' by Peaches & Herb was one of the earliest long players I purchased by an individual artist (all my spare money went into the compilations) and I wiled away countless hours poring over the sexy cover and back cover of the album; enjoying the disco and R&B confections on this great opus. 'Shake Your Groove Thing' had been a huge hit earlier in 1979, making the Top 5 in America, #11 here in oz. 'Reunited' was a best seller on Billboard's pop and R&B charts selling over 2 million copies. Here, it made #8 nationally. It has been a staple of 70's radio and for weddings! Swanee is the older brother of Cold Chisel's lead Jimmy Barnes who carved out a subsequent solo career of epic proportions. John Swan aka Swanee also had a strong following and 'Crazy Dreams' was his debut release but it only managed #68; spending 3 months in the Top 100. I re-striped the audio from this great film clip of Swanee performing his single. He would go on to bona fide Top 40 success in the 1980's with 'If I Were A Carpenter' and 'Lady, What's Your Name' two of his bigger hits. Rose Royce had her breakthrough hit with 'Car Wash' a few years before, but 'Love Don't Live Here Anymore' would return them to the upper echelons of the world charts in 1979 and this stunning soul ballad although not a sizable hit on Billboard's pop chart; it scaled the British charts to #2, and here in Australia to #10 and hanging around for a whopping 32 weeks! John Cougar was another international artist who broke through in Australia before the rest of the world. 'I Need A Lover' had been a massive hit in 1978 but was not released in America until a year later and included on his album 'John Cougar' which was his 3rd release. 'Miami' similarly did not find chart success in his homeland but we looked after him yet again; although this great pop/rock song only made #31 in the Spring of 1979. I recall it getting a lot of airplay at the time - what a powerful voice John has! Of course he would go on to achieve major album and single sales in the following decade with songs like 'Hurt So Good' and 'Jack & Diane' and the 'Scarecrow' mid 80's album among others. Part 3 of this recreation of 1979's Compile 'Bullseye' has an eclectic mix of hits from back in the day; including one of the most memorable songs from that year and some sounds that would foreshadow the directions that popular music would venture into in the ensuing decade. Stay tuned!
