Polygram record label issued 'Bullseye' a Polystar release on Vinyl and Cassette in the second half of 1979 here in Australia and it had a lot of really radio friendly and chart successful songs; as well as a couple of rarities, but it was one of the best compilations released that year and once again I am re-creating the track listing; either re-posting clips of mine or making some new ones to segue the whole album over 5 instalments of the 18 songs. Part 1 has 4 Top 10 hits from here in Oz - beginning with the catchy 'Hot Summer Nights' by a group who called themselves Night. Formed in America in 1978, but largely filled with British musicians, Night, only released two albums and their only major success downunder was this great song which was a Walter Egan ('Magnet & Steel') cover. Reaching #3 here, and spending 7 months in the chart, 'Hot Summer Nights' was a Billboard Top 20. Night did achieve a follow up with 'If You Remember Me' (#17) which peaked one point higher than its predecessor in America but a no -show in Australia; rendering Night a one hit wonder. Their sophomore set in 1980 'Long Distance' produced an unsuccessful release 'Love On The Airwaves' which was an Adult Contemporary Hit only. Nothing further was heard from this outfit. This is my original clip for 'Hot Summer Nights' from 2014. The Cars achieved their biggest chart success in Australia and their first Billboard Top 20 with 'Let's Go' a magnificent piece of retro pop and a song that still sounds so great more than 40 years on. Sung by Benjamin Orr, 'Let's Go' reached #6 and spent 6 months in our chart. Penned by Ric Ocasek, sadly both Ric and Benjamin are no longer with us, but The Cars I think are one of the best pop/roc bands from that era. More great songs followed after 'Let's Go' and the 1980's saw continued success for The Cars. Once again this clip is a re-post of mine from 2014 - bizarrely it only has 146 views!!!! As I age, I enjoy the music of this wonderful American band more! Roger Voudouris released 4 albums in his relatively short career, and is a true one hit wonder - 'Get Used To It' was only a moderate hit in America (#21), but downunder it went to #4; spending 5 months there. His hit single was produced by Michael Omartian, who was also the force behind the multi Grammy winning Doobie Brothers and Christopher Cross albums in 1979. As has been pointed out before, the lyric in Roger's song 'You Better Get Used To It, I'll Be Around' turned out not to be prophetic, and also tragically, Roger departed way too soon; succumbing to liver disease in 2003. This clip was also made and posted in 2014. Finally in this quartet of Top 10 hits in Australia in 1979, and the first four tracks from the Polystar compilation 'Bullseye' was a comeback hit for American John Stewart: 'Gold' and this one was prophetic as it was a Top 5 smash in his homeland as well as downunder, where it also spent 5 months selling copies. Backed by Lindsay Buckingham and Stevie Nicks whose unmistakable sound can be heard on background vocals, 'Gold' was John's first single to be released in more than a decade. John was a prolific songwriter; with the classic 'Daydream Believer' one penned by him. and he was part of The Kingston Trio as well as releasing several solo albums. 'Bombs Away Dream Baby' was the interesting title to the opus that yielded this hit single. Another musician having shuffled off the mortal coil, John Stewart died in 2008 at the age of 68. Part 2 of 'Bullseye' features two huge R&B hits, and two rock and roll stompers. More great retro sounds to come......
