Today I’m sharing a 1930s-style grocery haul based on the kinds of foods lower-income families commonly relied on during the Great Depression and wartime years. These are simple, practical ingredients that could stretch into many different meals and were often available to farm families or households trying to keep costs as low as possible. In this video I walk through the groceries and talk about what a typical weekly menu might have looked like for families during that time — focusing on affordable staples like flour, potatoes, beans, onions, simple fats, and preserved foods. Many of these foods were used again and again throughout the week in different ways to make sure nothing was wasted. It’s interesting to look back at how people planned meals when money was tight and compare it to how most of us shop and eat today. If you enjoy learning about traditional skills, cooking from scratch, gardening, and building a practical pantry, you’ll feel right at home here.
